Segment 3: Catapults, Chivalry and the Art of Living Dangerously

Author William Gurstelle (pictured, right) is famous for his books full of exciting backyard projects and activities, from potato guns to knife throwing, including all manner of improvised munitions. He is the science teacher most of us wish we’d had in middle school, and his books and videos encourage his fans to release their “inner MacGyver.” But his most recent book, Absinthe & Flamethrowers, looks at this penchant for (slightly) hair-raising projects not just as an instruction manual, but also as a philosophical treatise. (It is subtitled, “Ruminations on the Art of Living Dangerously.”) In this interview, William talks with Scott about the “artful” approach to risky living and the surprising connections to the ideals of chivalry. And, as a special medieval bonus, he gives some tips on how to make your own backyard catapult – a great summer project!

The monument to Lord Robert Baden-Powell looks remarkably like the statue of a knight of old - no surprise, since "chivalry" was one of B-P's guiding principles.

When Lord Robert Baden-Powell founded the Scouting movement in 1908, his first handbook, Scouting For Boys, included an entire chapter on “chivalry.” Since then, chivalry has been one of the guiding principles of the Cub, Girl and Boy Scouts. Take Our Listener Challenge: The Nine Worthies of Chivalry Today

In the Middle Ages, the Nine Worthies were the “top dogs” in the field of chivalry — the nine individuals who embodied the ideals of chivalry and knighthood: strength, valor, courtesy, honor, etc. They were broken down into three categories: “pagan” (Hector, Alexander and Caesar), Old Testament (Joshua, David and Judas Maccabeus) and Christian (King Arthur, Charlemagne [statue, pictured right] and Godfrey of Bouillon).

Now, Chivalry Today is putting out a challenge to listeners: Create a new list of Nine Worthies that reflects the ideals of chivalry in the modern world and the Seven Knightly Virtues as they apply in the 21st century. Our three categories are:

• Living — Individuals whose ongoing example demonstrates the value of chivalry;
• Historical — People from any period of history (from recent past to antiquity) who’ve lived by the code;
• Literary — Fictional characters from books, movies or other media who abide by the ideals of chivalry.

The only disqualifier: Names from the original list of Nine Worthies are off limits. They’re already acknowledged examples of chivalry; let’s come up with some fresh ideas!

Politicians, generals, discoverers, philosophers, poets, journalists, physicians, teachers, athletes, pilots, adventurers, aliens, detectives — anyone can be an example of chivalry on your list of Nine Worthies. Compose your list, with as much (or as little) explanation as you like as to why these nine names represent the qualities of chivalry in your mind. Then, send us your list using this form:

]]> I recently posted a blog piece (on May about Sara Tulchosky and a very notable incident in a college softball playoff game – an act so definitively “sportsmanlike” or “chivalrous” that it was picked up by pretty much every national media source you can imagine. With so much focus on a simple act of decent behavior, it seemed like a good indication of just how hungry the public is for an uplifting story from the world of sports – rather than another “police blotter” piece about the latest athlete to get arrested for rape, drug possession or animal cruelty.

Still, even as this story was being covered in papers from the LA Times to the NY Times, there were plenty of people scoffing that this wasn’t a real sports story – because something like this could only happen in a girls‘ league, and only girls would be soft enough actually do something nice for an opponent.

Stephen Colbert gave us a great satire of this sort of attitude when he claimed that girls’ softball, with its inherent decency and chivalry, was the fourth largest threat to national security in his regular “Threatdown” on Monday, May 12. (Of course, “bears” were number one.) Take a listen to the audio of Colbert’s Threatdown

It was a marvelous comedic jab at the ridiculous notion that only little girls are capable of being decent to each other on the playing field.
