My story happened just yesterday evening. We are currently the host parents for Hitomi, a foreign exchange student from Japan. Hitomi is 17 and attends the same high school as our two daughters.
Hitomi received a call from her mother and even though she was talking in the other room it was obvious from her cries of distress that something awful had happened. When she hung up the phone, she told us that her older brother had died that day in a car accident. She wanted to go home immediately.
Hitomi was clearly in shock and unable to handle the travel details. Her hosting agency would probably need a day or two to get things arranged, so my husband took on the problem. He started the process of acquiring tickets and trying to obtain a reduction in airfare because of bereavement. After several calls to Japan, and the airlines, the tickets were secured and we settled down for a few hours of sleep. At 3 a.m. Gary and Hitomi left for the airport.
These actions are a part of the compassion and generosity my husband shows to everyone. He is always putting other people’s needs before his own. He is truly my “knight in shining armor.”
