Medieval Longsword Experience: A Taster Lesson

Welcome to San Diego Longsword's Knight Nights: A Medieval Longsword Experience!

This 60-minute group session provides a glimpse into the art of historical fencing with the longsword, in a safe, supportive, and fun learning environment. Participants will learn two guards, two cuts, and some of the basic concepts of sword work. In addition to sword work we offer a hands on replica armor display which includes the chance to try on chain mail, a knight’s helmet, and gauntlets. The evening concludes with a fighting demonstration by coaches, and a Q&A.

This event is appropriate for ages 14 and up. All necessary equipment is provided. Students should arrive 10 minutes prior to class and wear comfortable athletic clothing and sneakers. Reserve your space by clicking the button below.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from Longsword 101?

The Medieval Longsword Experience is designed to give students a broad overview of fighting with the longsword. This is different from our introductory lesson in that it is designed for prospective students who want to learn more about our program before jumping straight in or for those looking for a fun activity with their friends on a Saturday night!

Will I get to fight with the longsword during this class?

Students will get to drill with the longsword and an experienced student partner. However, while we appreciate the enthusiasm that students bring to this martial art, it is a complex and subtle system of fighting; on average it takes about 8-10 weeks for students to learn enough techniques to begin slow speed freeplay. Think of the Medieval Longsword Experience as the sword equivalent of your first piano lesson. It’s going to be a while before you’re ready to play your first concert. However, if you’re willing to make the commitment to learning the technique, we’re confident that we can get you there!

What should I wear? What should I bring?

San Diego Longsword provides all of the loaner equipment necessary to get you started!

Students should wear comfortable athletic clothing. Closed toed non-marking athletic shoes are required for all attendees. Please, do not wear boots or sandals.
